2019 Scholarship Opportunities

The Blanche Fierstein Award honoring excellence in the pursuit of a special education degree is presented to the 2017 Award Recipient at the AHRC Rose Ball.

Blanche Fierstein will be remembered as an uncompromising leader in the field of special education whose singular vision and ability to inspire others shaped special education curricula and created unprecedented opportunities for people with developmental disabilites.

Blanche was an educator, mother and tireless advocate. Her own daughter with special needs inspired her to become a special education teacher. Quickly rising through the NYC Department of Education, Blanche was appointed as Principal of the Queens Occupational Training Center. There she was at the forefront, creating practical curricula and quality standards in vocational training. Her groundbreaking work and tireless resolve helped shape vocational training across New York State.

Award: $5,000

Applications are due:
April 29, 2019

  • Persons enrolled in college/university in Nassau County pursuing an advanced degree in special education
  • Employees of AHRC Nassau who have been employed for a minimum of one (1) year(s) and are pursuing an advanced degree in special education
  • AHRC Nassau Lifetime Members pursuing an advanced degree in special education (applicant does not need to be attending school in Nassau County)

The John Wendell Palmer Scholarship was established in 2017 by the family of John Wendell Palmer, a person with a developmental disability. The scholarship supports the educational aspirations of Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) recognizing the lifetime of care and support they provide.

Award: $2,500

Applications are due:
July 1, 2019 (Fall Award)
November 18, 2019 (Spring Award)

  • Persons enrolled in college or university pursuing a Bachelor’s or advanced degree
  • Employees of both Citizens Options Unlimited and AHRC Nassau noting that priority will be given to the following:
    • Employees of Citizens Options Unlimited’s Helen Kaplan ICF with special consideration being granted specifically to employees of House C
    • Employees of AHRC Nassau’s Uniondale Home

Direct Support Professional Excellence Award

Nomination Deadline: Friday, August 16, 2019

About the Award: This award, in the amount of $2,500, is presented to four (4) direct support professionals annually.  Through this award, The Arc New York recognizes individuals who consistently demonstrate excellence, creativity, and commitment in providing supports to people who have intellectual and other disabilities.  Candidates will have displayed an exemplary level of performance over the course of his/her employment and will have shown commitment to improving the quality of life for people who have intellectual and other disabilities.

The Arc New York Thomas A. Maul Direct Support Professional Excellence Award recipients will be recognized at the November 2019 Board of Governors meeting.

Self-Advocate of the Year Award

Nomination Deadline: Friday, August 16, 2019

About the Award: This award is designed to highlight, recognize, and celebrate the achievements and contributions made by The Arc New York’s self-advocates.  Nominees and recipients are individuals who not only use service of The Arc New York, but also help to shape those services in a manner that benefits others.

The Arc New York Self-Advocate of the Year will be recognized at the November 2019 Board of Governors meeting.

Volunteer of the Year Award

Nomination Deadline: Friday, August 16, 2019

This award provides the opportunity for The Arc New York to honor and recognize a volunteer member who has shown continued dedication, exemplary service, and advocacy on behalf of individuals who have intellectual or other developmental disabilities.

The Arc New York Volunteer of the Year will be honored at the November 2019 Fall Board of Governors meeting.

Employer Recognition Award

Nomination Deadline: Friday, July 12, 2019 

About the Award: Employers across the state are acknowledging the value of employing people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in their place of business.  The Arc New York Employer Recognition Award provides Chapters with an opportunity to recognize an individual, corporation, or business in New York State that has demonstrated outstanding support in providing services and job opportunities for people who have intellectual or other developmental disabilities.  Four (4) awards are presented annually.

The Arc New York Employer Recognition Award will be presented at the September 2019 Board of Governors meeting.
